Last month’s walk: Carn Dearg (Monadh Liath)
Walkers: Alan, David, Neil, Di and Myra
We had a late addition and a late call off for this one. Myra joined us at almost the last minute and Harry called off at the very last minute when his car wouldn’t start as he was about to leave on the Sunday morning.
We had all kinds of weather throughout the day. Lots of showers between warm sunny spells when down in the glens and gales up on the summits. The weather forecast got it pretty much right but I’m not sure if the predicted wind chill actually got down to -10c (July?).
This hill was more distance than climbing with perhaps 50% over pathless or boggy ground so wasn’t particularly easy. We were all pretty tied at the end of it. We gave the chippy a miss this time and opted for the café at Ballinluig instead so we could have a sit down and a cuppa with our food. They now give free tea/coffee refills and needless to say we took full advantage. Myra for one must have had plenty to eat as she was heard to say that she was so full that she didn’t have enough room left for a scone. That must be a first!
Thanks to David for driving once again.
This month’s walk: Sunday 24th August 2008
Please note that I have made this months walk a week later than usual as I will be taking my oldest son to Glasgow airport on the 17th and waving him off on his 12 month trip to Austraila and New Zealand. I hope that is ok with all of you.
This month’s walk: Ben More (and Stob Binnein) OS Map no 51. Leaving from the starting point close to Benmore Farm in Glen Dochart at NN415259. The Munro book puts it at 2hrs 30 mins to the top of Ben More and a further 50 minutes to Stob Binnein. Unlike last month this will be more climbing than distance. 6.00am departure once again. Please let me know by Thursday 21st August so that cars and drivers can be organised.
September:
It has been suggested that we have a weekend away in September. The Five Sisters of Kintail is the target probably staying in the YH at Ratagan. The normal BEMAC third Sunday in the month is, I know, not suitable for some so the proposed date is the weekend of 13/14th September, driving up after work on the Friday, so come on who’s up for it. If you don’t fancy the Five Sisters there are ‘hundreds’ of other Munros, Corbetts and Grahams in the Glen Shiel area. Please let me know if you want to go as soon as possible as I’ll have to book the hostel. Ratagan is not a big hostel (40 beds) but it is set in a stunning location and only a short drive away from the Five Sisters. There is availability at the moment @ £12.50 per night so let’s get in quick.
Other stuff:
The website is now up and running www.bemac.org Anybody who wants walk photos posted please either e mail them to me or send prints and I will scan them. Perhaps different people might like to write the walk report from time to time to get a different perspective on things.
Thanks to Neil for some Carn Dearg photos.
